We have just returned from a 7-day/6-night private Pantanal trip with Pantanal Trackers, travelling as a couple specifically to experience the jaguars of Porto Jofre.
The wildlife experience was exceptional. We had multiple jaguar encounters, including a mother with two young, close interactions between jaguars, swimming, drinking, walking and simply watching them behaving naturally along the river. We also had some wonderful sightings of giant anteaters, tapirs, ocelots, monkeys, caiman, hyacinth macaws, toucans and plenty more.
The highlight was undoubtedly spending many hours on the river with the jaguars. The amount of time available to stay with an animal rather than simply getting a quick sighting was particularly valuable for photography.
A word of advice for anyone coming from an African safari background, as we do: the Pantanal is a very different proposition. We are used to relatively luxurious African safari camps, excellent accommodation and fairly polished logistics. Porto Jofre is much more basic and rustic by comparison. The river days can be long and physically demanding, and the heat and humidity are considerable. There is also a certain amount of "hard-core" adventure to the experience!
But that is not necessarily a criticism — it's part of the Pantanal experience. You are going into a wild environment primarily to see wildlife, rather than going on a luxury holiday with wildlife included. Once we understood that, we embraced it.
We were particularly pleased with the time we spent with José, who guided us for much of the trip, and with our boatman. Despite some inevitable language limitations with José, we had some fantastic sightings and he worked hard to find wildlife for us.
We also appreciated Julinho's knowledge and experience of the Pantanal and jaguar tracking. His long experience clearly contributes to understanding where and when to look, although, as with any genuinely wild animal, there are absolutely no guarantees of seeing a jaguar.
For us, the trip delivered exactly what we had travelled to Brazil hoping for: extraordinary encounters with wild jaguars and some photographs and memories we'll have for the rest of our lives.
If you're looking for a luxury African-style safari camp, this probably isn't that. If you're looking for a genuine, immersive and sometimes hard-core wildlife adventure, Porto Jofre is something very special.
We'd certainly consider returning 🐆👍🏻
