点评:Henlopen State Park sits next to Lewes, Delaware not far from Rehoboth Beach. The park is on a spit or peninsula dividing the Delaware Bay from the Atlantic Ocean. The park itself is well worth a visit -- note in particular how different the side facing the Atlantic is from the side facing the Bay, even though they may be as little as a few hundred yards apart.
On the Atlantic side south of the point you will find the Fort Miles historic area, which was an unexpected surprise for us. Fort Miles once housed 2,300 soldiers to defend the entrance of Delaware Bay from attacks from German surface ships. German U-boats patrolled in sight of land in this area, but, as we all know, no German surface vessels ever attacked this site. The troops here, however, perfected various artillery fire techniques and trained others who were sent into combat.
What remains are many of the block barracks, at least one bunker, several enormous guns, and various artifacts. The core is a museum housed in a former bunker, with explanatory material, models, and important items. The museum is only a few rooms (and most of these are part of the original bunker).
One of the best artifacts is an Enigma machine, apparently taken from a U-boat that surrendered here once peace was declared with Germany. If you have seen the film "The Imitation Game" about Alan Turing, it was almost impossible for the allies to even get one of these machines, and the bulk of the movie explains how they ultimately managed to decrypt it.
Outside, they have several enormous guns used for defense and one taken from an American warship. One striking display shows what a 1,000-pound shell from one of these guns would do to a steel plate even several inches thick.
There is no separate charge for the museum, but the park itself charges a fee by car (not the person). For Delaware residents it is $10, and for others it is $20. Particularly if you enjoy the entire park, it's a fair fee.
Anyone can and should enjoy the park. The Fort Miles section will be of particular interest to history buffs or those interested in World War II, but even the non-historians in our group were impressed by the artillery displays.
