点评:Visiting the General Sherman Tree is definitely a bucket-list experience, but there are a few practical things I wish I had known before visiting.
At the entrance to Sequoia National Park, there are two lanes for visitors who already have tickets or a National Park pass, and one lane for visitors purchasing tickets. Interestingly, the line for those who already had tickets/pass was actually longer when we visited. The visitor center has limited parking, so plan accordingly.
From the park entrance, it’s roughly 17–18 miles to the General Sherman Tree parking area via Generals Highway. The drive is beautiful, but the average speed is around 20 mph, so it takes longer than the distance might suggest. There are several lookout points along the way with parking, so it’s worth stopping occasionally and enjoying the views.
Parking near General Sherman Tree can be challenging, especially after 1 PM. I would strongly recommend arriving early, particularly if you plan to hike or are traveling with young children.
The General Sherman Tree itself is about 0.4 miles from the parking area. The trail involves stairs and is not fully stroller-friendly. Parents traveling with a stroller will likely have to put in some extra effort getting it up and down. There are wooden benches along the way, which are helpful places to stop and catch your breath, especially on the climb back.
Restrooms at the top are portable restrooms.
The surroundings were somewhat different from what I had imagined. Because of wildfires and the summer conditions, there were areas with fewer trees and vegetation. Nevertheless, seeing the General Sherman Tree in person is impressive, and I would consider Sequoia National Park a must-visit at least once.
One thing I would strongly recommend is avoiding the peak summer heat if possible, especially if hiking is part of your plan. During our visit in August, temperatures at the lower elevations were above 100°F (38°C). A cooler season would make hiking much more comfortable.
A few practical tips:
* Go early for easier parking and cooler temperatures.
* If traveling with a stroller, be prepared for stairs and uneven sections.
* Download offline maps before entering the park—cell service is very limited or nonexistent in many areas.
* Download your music/podcasts in advance if you want entertainment during the drive.
* Carry a power bank or car charger, since you may be without cell service for long stretches.
* Be careful while driving downhill on Generals Highway, as pedestrians sometimes walk along the paved road.
Overall, General Sherman Tree is a memorable experience and worth seeing at least once. Just plan your timing carefully. Early morning and cooler seasons would be my preference, particularly for families or anyone planning to hike.
