We paid for a 90-minute session at Sol Duc Hot Springs and left after just five minutes. That’s how unpleasant the experience was.
Despite having timed reservations, the pools were incredibly overcrowded. The entire purpose of timed entry should be to manage capacity and provide a reasonably comfortable experience, but that clearly wasn’t happening.
The water was cloudy and filled with visible sediment, hair, grass, and other floating debris. There was little apparent water movement or circulation, leaving us questioning how effectively the pools were being maintained. Other guests independently commented on how gross the conditions were, and we watched several people leave after only 5–10 minutes.
The facilities were equally disappointing. Both the men’s and women’s restrooms were dirty. My husband and father reported that the men’s restroom floor was so filthy it left the bottoms of their feet black.
For a commercial hot springs facility charging admission and operating with timed reservations, this is unacceptable. We had planned part of our Olympic National Park itinerary around this experience, only to abandon it almost immediately.
Afterward, I looked through other visitor reviews and discovered similar complaints about overcrowding, dirty water, and poor maintenance spanning multiple years. Clearly, our experience was not unique.
The surrounding scenery is beautiful, but it doesn’t compensate for the condition of the pools and facilities. Management needs to address cleanliness, water maintenance, and capacity control.
I strongly recommend skipping Sol Duc Hot Springs until these issues are addressed.
