点评:So Many Middle School Jokes About The Name, Bumpass! We were told that the one "must do" hike in Lassen Volcanic National Park is the Bumpass Hell Trail. In 1864, mountaineer, explorer, (and unfortunately named) Kendall Vanhook Bumpass first saw this steaming hissing, thumping hydrothermal area that you see in my photos (below). The sour egg/ sulfur smell reminded us of Yellowstone NP, but on a smaller scale, with steam vents and bubbling mud pots, but no geysers. Living up to its name, the trail was hellishly hot. It's free to go on the trail once you're in the park. We found parking, but cars lined the road for a way. This was a popular trail with consistent crowds - people shimmied past us walking the opposite way the entire time we were out walking in the heat. I would say it was an hour walk each way. Assuming you are comfortable navigating uneven terrain and some elevation, and if heat doesn't bother you too much, this trail to the bubbling and stinky mud pots was a lot of fun. Bring water, wear a hat and sunscreen, and you're good to go. I am so glad we went here.
