Breath taking views well worth the hike

点评：We took the Alum Cave Trail, which was a challenging hike to get to the peak - Mt Le Conte, but you can also enjoy a hike without going all the way, as there is a shallow river and are lots of waterfalls for the first mile or two of the hike. There's a national park lodge close to the top with cabins for rent (book in advance), they also have Ilamas that I think can also be rented to carry gear. They also sell some small snacks, drinks, and souvenirs. They also have a public bathroom and water spigot.
It is not a technical hike, but does have almost 3000 ft elevation gain from the trailhead. There are not really caves - unless we missed them, but there is a large rock that you walk under. There are a few parts that could be slightly slippery, but there were permanent metal wires
installed to easily hold onto. It would be safe for supervised kids, but if young, you'd not want them to run too far ahead as there are large drop offs - often with the wire to hold if you need it - on a few parts of the trail.
The views from the top are breathtaking. We did encounter a black bear and two cubs on the way down, but with us making some noise and talking loudly to them, they turned around and walked away, and never appeared aggressive.
