A sad story of the demise of a rare whale, possibly due to man's intervention
Cuvier's Beaked Whale Skeleton的点评
点评：Wednesday 17th June we visited the town of Gran Tarajal which is located on the south-east coast of the Island.
Having walked along the Promenade we found ourselves outside the gates of the Port.
It was here that we saw the skeleton of Cuvler's Beaked Whale outside the gates of the Port. The bones are held together with metal bolts and wire and is supported by metal rods and mounted on a blue painted concrete column.
Alongside the skeleton there is an information board that provides the following information about it:-
"Senda de los Cetáaceos - The natural skeleton you are looking at belongs to a Cuvler's Beaked Whale that was found stranded lifeless in April 2005 at Rogue Negro (Tuineje) in an area near the Entallada light house lt was an adult female measuring 5.5 metres. This species has been subject to significant mass strandings. The investigation of mass strandings in 2002 coinciding with military manoeuvres led to a ban on military sonar within a 50 nautica mile perimeter around the Canary lslands in Spain in 2004 .
Beaked whales measure between 4 and 10 metres in length. They are dlstributed throughout the oceans, although the true distribution of many species is largely unknown. Oceanic habits and evasive behaviour mean that sightings of live animals are rare. Beaked whales are some of the least known creatures on the planet and in some cases have never been seen at sea.
It is possible to determine the species, sex and age of a beaked Whale by the shape and location of the single pair of teeth in its jaw. lts diet is based on squid and crustaceans that it catches at depths of more than 1,000 metres. It can remain under water for up to 2 hours without coming up for air
Know, protect and conserve the sea and its biodiversity".
