A wonderful stay in Hougoumont

点评：We stayed in the farm in the old gardeners house which is now offered as a ‘gite’ I cannot describe what an honour it was to stay in this last preserved monument of the great and terrible battle of Waterloo.
It is so peaceful and in the evening as the sun goes down you can wander up to the ridge and see the whole area from the Allied lines.
There is a chapel on site, ruined by the battle but enough survives to be a place for meditation and where families and regiments still leave their tributes. Unlike the new museum and gift shop you can get away from the ‘ Napoleon Show’ and contemplate the nature of bravery, loss and survival in a beautiful peaceful and tastefully renovated environment.
The great joy in staying here is that you can wander around or just sit beside the chapel with a book when the sightseers have gone and feel that it is a very special place to be allowed to experience.
I would not recommend for young children or the infirm as there are steep stairs to the entrance and to the roof bedroom. You can walk to the Lion mound, museum and restaurant from here in 20 minutes. The car park is right outside and there is a small tea room next door. The staff couldn’t be more helpful and we met lots of people from the allied countries some of whom had relatives that fought with Wellington.
