Beautiful culture, but uncomfortable experience.

点评：Be careful if you visit Pushkar. We went for an early morning walk around the lake. Within minutes a pandit/preist told (not kindly invited) to take my shoes off and come to the waters edge. He then gradually involved me in a puja, asking me to repeat chants, and eventually introduce a “sankalp” and donation, at which point expected money. I gave R50, he said it was not enough and literally demanded more!
The issue is not the religious ritual or voluntary dakshina itself. The problem is that the cost/donation expectation is not made clear upfront. You feel pressured to pay after you have already participated in the ritual.
My advice: do not agree to any puja before clearly asking whether there is any payment or expected donation. If someone says it is free, confirm that there is no mandatory dakshina or donation. You are free to decline and walk away.
Pushkar is a beautiful and deeply religious place, but tourists should be able to worship without feeling pressured or financially exploited.
Pushkar has plenty of cultural interest, but unfortunately we found the experience quite uncomfortable at times. The constant staring from local people and domestic tourists was intrusive, and I was repeatedly photographed without anyone asking permission. This happened often enough to make me feel very self-conscious while walking around.
The relentless haggling from shopkeepers also became exhausting, with very little opportunity to browse without being approached.
Another significant downside was the smell from open drains/sewerage in some areas, which at times was extremely overpowering.
Pushkar may appeal to some travellers, but I would suggest being prepared for these aspects before visiting, particularly if you value a relaxed and unobtrusive experience.
