点评:My boyfriend and I visited Elephant Steps today, and honestly, it was the best experience of our trip so far. From the moment we arrived, it was so clear how much the workers genuinely love and care for the animals. This is somewhere that truly exceeded our expectations.
Our day started at 8:40am when we were collected from our accommodation in Chiang Rai and taken on a roughly 40-minute drive into a beautiful, secluded area where the animals are able to roam freely. We were welcomed with coffee and tea before being introduced to the four elephants we would be spending the day with.
We were given boots because it’s wet season and then set off into the jungle with the elephants. One of the things we loved most was that the elephants were completely in charge. We simply followed them at their own pace along the trail rather than the elephants being made to perform or do anything for tourists. We had heard so many horror stories about so-called “ethical sanctuaries” where animals are still chained, mistreated or forced to entertain visitors, so seeing how genuinely respected these elephants were was incredibly reassuring.
We spent around two hours walking through the jungle with them, and we were also delighted when four of the sanctuary’s dogs decided to join us for the day! As huge dog lovers, this was honestly one of the highlights for us. 🐕❤️
Elephant Steps is also home to around 60 stray dogs, all of whom are clearly extremely well cared for. They also have chickens, donkeys and boars that have been rescued from slaughterhouses. It was amazing to see so many different animals living together in such a peaceful environment.
After our jungle walk, we stopped by a beautiful lake for lunch. The food was completely vegetarian, incredibly fresh and genuinely some of the nicest food we’ve had so far in Thailand. We then got to take a bamboo raft out onto the lake — and, of course, one of the dogs came along with us too! 🥹
We spent some time relaxing by the lake with the elephants, dogs and the lovely workers before eventually making our way back to the sanctuary. We had another coffee before being driven back to our accommodation.
The entire day felt almost surreal. The workers were incredibly kind, welcoming and accommodating, and they made us feel like part of the family rather than tourists. Most importantly, it never felt like the animals were there for our entertainment — we were guests in their world.
I think it’s so important for tourists to educate themselves about animal welfare before booking an elephant sanctuary experience, because unfortunately not every place that calls itself “ethical” truly is. Elephant Steps completely blew us away, and we left feeling so happy that we had chosen somewhere where the animals’ wellbeing genuinely comes first.
We couldn’t recommend Elephant Steps highly enough. ❤️🐘🐕 We really hope they continue to get more visitors and support, because places like this deserve it!

Elephant Steps
