点评：Absolutely appalling experience on a ScotRail service from Edinburgh to Dunfermline on Sep 9th, 2026.
One of the carriages was taken out of use because the internal lights were not working. Apparently, having passengers in a carriage without functioning lights — in broad daylight — was considered a safety issue.
The solution? Force everyone into the remaining carriages until people were packed together so tightly that they could barely move.
And I don’t mean “a very busy train.” I mean genuinely frightening overcrowding.
By the time we reached Haymarket, the train was already so full that most people waiting on the platform physically could not get on. A few somehow managed to squeeze themselves into an already completely packed train, but after that there was effectively ZERO space for anyone else to board at subsequent stops.
The crowding inside was unbelievable. I couldn’t even turn my body sideways. People were pressed against one another with nowhere to move, and several women close to me were visibly distressed and experiencing anxiety and panic because they were effectively trapped in the crowd.
The most alarming part was when the doors opened. People were packed so tightly against the doors — not by choice, but because of the sheer force and pressure of passengers behind them — that the moment the doors opened, people literally spilled out onto the platform. There simply wasn’t enough physical space inside the carriage for everyone who had been forced into it.
I don’t use this comparison lightly, but in terms of the sheer crowding and people being compressed against one another with no ability to move themselves, it honestly felt like a train version of the Hillsborough disaster. Obviously I am not comparing the tragic outcome of Hillsborough to a train journey; I am talking specifically about the frightening principle of having so many human beings compressed into a confined space that people begin losing control over their own movement.
That level of crowd pressure should NEVER be considered acceptable on a passenger train.
And what makes the whole situation completely asinine is that an entire carriage was sitting there unavailable because its LIGHTS weren’t working — during daylight hours.
If this decision was supposedly made in the name of “safety”, somebody needs to seriously reconsider what safety actually means.
Imagine if there had been a fire, collision, medical emergency or need for a rapid evacuation. People couldn’t even turn their bodies under normal circumstances, never mind move quickly towards an exit.
How is THAT safer than allowing passengers to sit or stand in a carriage without internal lighting in broad daylight?
Rules and safety procedures are supposed to protect people. They should not be applied so mindlessly that following one rule creates a considerably more obvious hazard…..how can they deem a crush better than using the spare carriage that simply had no lights inside …..in daylight ?? Make it make sense!
This wasn’t simply an uncomfortable journey or the usual complaint about having to stand on a busy train. It was an astonishing lack of common sense and, in my opinion, an entirely avoidable passenger-safety issue.
