点评:I have been to Grand Canyon National Park 4 times, and I have only used Bright Angel Trail to go into the canyon. However, before taking 7 other couples to the park, I had a hometown friend tell me to take South Kaibab to Ooh Aah Point for a great canyon experience and for that we were all richly rewarded.
On our last day as we left Grand Canyon for Page, we stopped at South Kaibab on our we out starting our hike at 8:00 AM. Even that time parking spaces along the road were starting to fill, but we all got spaces and a fun 0.5 mile one way hike along the rim. After a restroom break at the trailhead, we all began our descent into the Canyon. The hike to Ooh Aah point on South Kaibab is two miles round trip with 662 feet of elevation gain which is a good, sweet spot for a group of fourteen 50 and 60 year olds.
The great thing about hiking in the desert and Grand Canyon specifically, is you can really see where you will be hiking and what is in front of you. As you begin, the descent is immediately with a series of switchbacks as you move down the sheer canyon walls. It then levels to a long stretch of trail that parallels the ridge to Yaki Point, before a further descent with only a couple of switchbacks to Ooh Aah point.
The entire hike is beautiful and incredible from amazing views of the canyon walls to the most incredible views of the canyon from inside at Ooh Aah point. While there were people on the trail, for a regular hike much less in Grand Canyon, it was not crowded until you reach Ooh Aah point. At the point there were several groups resting and taking pictures just as we did so you may have to wait a couple of minutes to get that perfect photo; however, this is the place to do it. The good thing is you can find someone to take your picture and the person we found had been giving a squirrel water from his water bottle, see the picture.
We then hiked back up, and it was not that bad, even the more vertical part near the trailhead. Along the way we got amazing photos. In all from car to car, including the 1.0 round trip on the rim, the hike took us two hours, and it was probably our best hike in Grand Canyon. Just like the rim, the more places you can see the canyon from, the more incredible it is. Do as many different trails as you can into the canyon, but if you can only do one, hike this one to at least Ooh Aah point.
