点评：The Skyline Caverns are estimated to be approximately 50 to 60 million years old. But they were only discovered in 1937 by Walter S. Amos, a retired geologist and mineralogist from Winchester, Virginia. Located at 10344 Stonewall Jackson Highway near Front Royal, Virginia, a mile from the northern entrance to Skyline Drive in the Shenandoah National Park, Skyline Caverns is a series of geologic caves and a popular tourist attraction that offers year-round guided tours that depart every 15 to 20 minutes and last about one hour and cover about 1 1/8 miles of walking while reaching a depth of 260 feet below ground. The tour covers only about 20 percent of the caverns. Visitors see stalactities, stalagmites, columns, anthodites and aragonites and three flowing streams. Additional attractions include a miniature train ride and mirror maze. During his digging, Amos discovered anthodites, an unusual form of crystal or perfect six-sided crystalline structures made of pure calcite. These crystals are protected by Virginia State Law and are kept behind closed doors that a tour guide must open for the public to view them.
