点评:The theme of the Lloyd Tilghman House and Civil War Museum in Paducah, Kentucky, is "Dixie Forever" and it only proves that, in many parts of the Old South, the Civil War still is being fought, that "The Cause" will never be forgotten. Located at 631 Kentucky Avenue, at South 7th Street, the two-story house was built in 1852 in the Greek Revival style by Robert Woolfolk in behalf of Tilghman, who rented the house but never owned it. A railroad civil engineer, Tilghmam spent most of his time working on a railroad in Panama while his wife and seven children lived in the house. In 1861, Tilghman, a West Point graduate, joined the Confederate Army as the Colonel of a Kentucky regiment, rose to the rank of Brigadier General, surrendered Fort Henry on the Tennessee River to Union General Ulysses S. Grant in 1862, then was killed in the Battle of Champion Hill during the Vicksburg campaign in 1863. During the war, Paducah and the Tilghman house became a flashpoint. After Tilghman left, Woolfolk moved into the house, flew a Confederate flag over the house, sparked a riot and was banished to Canada in 1864. Paducah was a supply base for the Union Army. The house was saved from demolition and opened as a museum in 1987. Operated by the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the Tilghman Heritage Foundation, it focuses on the Western theater of the Civil War in general and Western Kentucky's role in the war in particular. Open to the public from noon to 4 Wednesday through Saturday, it features an extensive collection of uniforms, weapons, photographs, maps, documents, period furnishings and Civil War artifacts. Interestingly, it details Tilghman's disgrace at Fort Henry and his gallantry before his death at Champion Hill. A statue of Tilghman stands in nearby Langdon Park. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.
