Substantial ruins to explore and stairs to climb
Linlithgow Palace的点评
点评：This historic ruin is located a short walk from the town Cross where there are plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants to provide refreshments before or after a visit.
There is some parking on site beyond a narrow gateway and on the afternoon we went along it would have been feasible to have obtained a space as there were relatively few visitors. However we had parking at our nearby accommodation and didn’t require this option. Admission is free to Members of Historic Scotland, £11 for an adult, £9.00 concession and £6.50 for a child (7 - 15 years old). There are discounts available for booking online and/or providing evidence of travel to the attraction by public transport. As Members we got free access on what was intended as a short reconnaissance visit to establish what was open to visitors - we would hope to return with our grandchildren at a later date.
Although there was scaffolding erected in various places in connection with restoration work, the Palace is a vast building and there was still plenty to explore. The fountain in the courtyard is a particularly decorative piece of stonework and there are lots of stairs to climb and passageways to venture down. I'd recommend bringing a torch to better view some of the vaulted areas.
There is no audio guide equipment to borrow/hire as sometimes exist at visitor attractions however visitors can apparently download an audio guide to their mobile phone. Check the Historic Scotland website for details of downloading prior to your visit. There are some interpretation boards with information and a guidebook can also be purchased for those who are “old school“/don't like Apps or want a souvenir.
The main claim to fame of the Palace is that it was the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots, although the part of the building where that event is thought to have taken place is within a section where all the floors are gone. You can look up into the space where the chamber would have been.
That said there are still plenty of other parts of the structure which remain intact including a couple of towers which can be accessed to great heights. A bit of a head for heights is required in these cases and if in the company of young children (or grandchildren) it would be wise to keep them close at hand. You also need a bit of stamina to climb the spiral stairs. There are good views to be had from the top over other sections of the Palace and Linlithgow Loch.
We will likely return for a more full exploration another day.
