点评:For years, I passed the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens on my way to downtown Sarasota or St. Armands Circle or Longboat Key. My curiosity finally got the best of me. I had to see what it was all about. Located at 1534 Mound Street, or U.S. Route 41, at 900 South Palm Avenue, the 15-acre gardens were founded in 1973 on the grounds of the former home of Marie and William Selby. The gardens feature more than 20,000 living plants, including 5,500 orchids, 3,500 bromeliads and 1,600 other plants. The living collection is accompanied by an herbarium, with dried and preserved specimens of tropical flora. Also the world's second largest spirit collection containing nearly 28,000 vials of flowers in preservative fluids. Interestingly, during their relentless research, botanists representing Selby gardens have discovered or described more than 2,000 plant species previously unknown to science. The gardens also maintain banyans, bamboo, live oaks, palms, mangroves, wildflowers, a butterfly garden, a fragrance garden, an edible garden and a koi pond on a site bordering Sarasota Bay. Marie Selby Botanical Gardens was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998,
