点评：Our second outing of the day took us to the USS Missouri, a ship whose sheer size and presence are striking even before you step aboard. We briefly considered walking from Michael’s place since it was only a short five- to ten-minute trip, but the darkening skies convinced us to drive instead. That ended up being the right call, as rain swept in during part of our visit, adding a dramatic backdrop to a place already steeped in history.
The USS Missouri was an Iowa-class battleship and the last battleship commissioned by the United States. During World War II, it supported major operations at Iwo Jima and Okinawa and is best known as the site where Japan formally surrendered on September 2, 1945, bringing the war to an official close. After the war, the Missouri continued to serve with distinction during the Korean War, was later modernized and returned to duty in the 1980s and remained in service until it was decommissioned for the final time in 1992.
The visit began with a partially guided tour led by a knowledgeable guide who brought the ship’s wartime history to life, pointing out key locations and sharing stories about the Missouri’s role in World War II. Standing on its decks, it was impossible not to think about the generations who had served aboard it and the pivotal events connected to this ship. Once the guided portion ended, we continued exploring on our own, moving through the narrow passageways and open decks at a slower pace. That extra time made it easier to appreciate not only the scale of the battleship, but also the feeling of being surrounded by a living piece of history. Even with the rain passing through, it turned out to be one of those visits that stays with you long after you leave.
