点评：Lookout Mountain is only 2,389 feet high. But it is the highest point in Walker County and offers a spectacular view of the Tennessee River, the city of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Missionary Ridge, site of one of the bloodiest battles in the Civil War. Geographically, it is a mountain ridge that touches the northwest corner of Georgie, the northeast corner of Alabama and a patch of southeastern Tennessee. Historically, it was the scene of the 18th century "Last Battle of the Cherokees" during the Nickajack Expedition and the site of the Battle of Lookout Out Mountain on November 24, 1863 during the Civil War. From its summit, a marker claims that visitors can view seven states though there is no scientific evidence to prove it. The foothills of the mountain extend into Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, sites of other Civil War battles. Today, Lookout Mountain is a popular tourist destination and features the Battle of Lookout Mountain Museum, the Lookout Mountain Incline railway, Sunset Rock, Covenant College, a hang-gliding school, Rock City and Ruby Falls, a cave with a 145-foot waterfall deep inside the mountain. For Civil War buffs, like me, Lookout Mountain offers a fascinating experience. Fought on the slopes of the mountain, featuring a majority of hand-to-hand combat, in a fog that descended from the cooler mountaintop, Ulysses S. Grant's Union troops won the battle and lifted the Confederate siege of Chattanooga. Afterward, impressed by Grant's victories at Vicksburg and Lookout Mountain, President Abraham Lincoln ordered him to come East to confront Confederate General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia.
