点评:I have visited many forts like Fort Adams, and most are in much better condition. While the structure appears intact from the outside, the interior spaces are debris-strewn shells, held up by support beams in some places. While some reconstruction/renovation is in progress, nothing is complete. The $16 self-guided tour cost is therefore steep to walk around the crumbling structure and empty rooms of a place with minimal historical significance.
That said, there are unique and worthwhile things to see here, even if there are better-preserved and restored forts. It is huge, much larger than other forts of this era. There are underground anti-sapper tunnels that I’d never seen at a fort before. Apparently, these were formerly accessible only on a guided tour, but are now open to all visitors. The other point of interest is the viewing platform on top of the casement providing a panoramic view of Newport and the harbor that are likely unmatched anywhere in the city. I wouldn’t bother with a guided tour of a fort with so little to see, but I would still recommend visiting for the hour or so it takes to walk around it and through the tunnels.
