I honestly don’t understand why Kuta, Lombok receives such good reviews. I found the main beach dirty, and the beach walkway passes through a very poor local settlement with simple corrugated-metal homes, where families keep chickens and goats.
I was also disappointed by the food scene. Most restaurants cater to tourists, serving pizza, pasta, Mexican, Japanese and other international cuisines, while authentic local Indonesian food was surprisingly limited.
Transport wasn’t as convenient or inexpensive as I expected either. Grab didn’t work, and Gojek cars were limited, making it harder and more expensive to get around if you don’t ride a scooter.
The surrounding beaches outside Kuta are far more beautiful, but Kuta town itself just wasn’t the experience I was expecting.
