点评:Our personal experience
We purchased some high-quality and beautiful ceramics here, as well as olive oil and honey. Unfortunately, our overall shopping experience was disappointing.
There were no clearly visible price labels in the shop. We were initially given a certain price for several pieces, but at checkout the total was suddenly a few euros higher. When we asked about this, the owner explained, among other things, that there had been so many tourists that day that he could no longer remember which price he had quoted to whom. The difference was also explained as being due to packaging materials. We were offered a 15% discount for paying in cash.
We were also left with questions regarding the origin of the ceramics. The owner gave us the impression that the pieces came from his own traditional family workshop. He presented the glazing as his own special work and explained that, following a motorcycle accident, he no longer had enough strength in his hands to carry out other work on the ceramics.
While shopping in Chania, we happened to visit Michael Laventzakis Handmade Ceramics, where we noticed some pieces that were the same or very similar to those we had purchased. When we asked about this, we were told that the seller in question purchases from them as a customer/reseller.
Other reviews also describe similar experiences regarding pricing and statements about the origin of the products. This further prompted us to take a closer look at the stated origin of the pieces we had purchased.
We cannot determine whether our specific items actually came from Michael Laventzakis, and therefore do not wish to claim that the seller’s account has been proven false.
However, we also compared the prices and found that comparable items were offered there at the time for considerably less, in some cases at almost half the price we paid. Given the story we were told in the shop, this was very surprising to us.
Our intention was to consciously support a local Cretan family and genuine craftsmanship. It was therefore disappointing to have doubts afterwards about whether our understanding of the origin of the products was actually correct.
On a positive note: The ceramics, olive oil and honey themselves are high quality and beautiful.
If supporting Cretan craftsmanship directly is important to you, based on our experience we recommend buying directly from the producers and, if possible, visiting the workshop in person.
To the seller:
If our understanding regarding your own workshop or the origin of the products is incorrect, you are welcome to clarify this publicly – for example, by providing the address of your workshop and the possibility of seeing the production or glazing process there in person.
