点评:An excellent day trip from Jacksonville, Florida - a mere 75 minute drive. The visitor center lived up to its intention - a treasure trove of information - artifacts, film presentation, models, dioramas, brochures, and all sorts of souvenirs. The drive to the boardwalk has insightful stops and marked walking trails. The boardwalk itself over the swamp has been renovated recently and it is an easy climb to the watchtower for splendid views of the “prairie”. Close by is the homestead. Although entry inside is not permitted - you can peer in and sit on the swing and rocking chair on the porch - you can stroll the sandy grounds on which stands marked remains of facilities needed to live off the grid - well, chicken coop, cane crusher, molasses boiling for syrup, and such.
We took a morning boat trip into the swamp - run by Okefenokee Adventures, a concessionaire. It is located beside the Wildlife Refuge visitor center. The two hour motorized and covered boat tour with the guide gives an introduction to the vast swamp, the human history of the place and close encounters with the flora and fauna. Alligators all around as are all varieties of birds. Guide stops the boat to enable getting a close look and take pictures. The place is up for inclusion as an UNESCO World Heritage site.
