Point Lookout State Park的点评
点评：This is a great state park with varied attractions.
We camped in a RV in the part of the campground that had full hookups. It was renovated within the last two years, so everything there was new--road, pads, electric, water, and sewer hookups. Each camp site was carved out of pine woods and high grass, so very private--you couldn't see your neighbors. The fire ring had hardly been used, the pad was level, and the gravel area for the picnic table was new and raked. There are no bath houses in this part, however.
There are two beaches. The small beach on the Chesapeake side has a bathroom nearby. It has a small breakwater jutting into the water, so the water was tranquil on either side of it. The much larger beach on the Potomac side of the peninsula has a large parking lot, scores of picnic tables, and a bathhouse that is only open on weekends. However, there was a bathroom a few hundred feet away by the Civil War site that was open. The breakwaters here are multiple and run parallel to the shore to form a protected swimming area.
We didn't get a chance to visit the Civil War site, but there is an encampment with good signage. It is walkable from the beach area. The area nearer the lighthouse was the site of the huge prison for Confederate prisoners. Good signage.
We are not fishermen, but on the Chesapeake side there is a long pier, newly constructed, for fishing. There is a brand new bathroom there and recently paved parking lot. We did not visit the camp store which also is on the Potomac side of the road.
Lots of bird activity--flamingos, osprey, eagles, shorebirds. Our bet is that there would be plenty of migratory warblers here in the spring.
Down the road a little bit on the other side, there is a boat launch. One feature there is a screened fish cleaning station with stainless steel sinks inside a screened building. Very impressive. There are lots of opportunities for boating or kayaking with the Chesapeake, Potomac, and a large, enclosed body of water--Lake Conoy and Point Lookout Creek--that would permit kayaking in a protected environment. Lake Conoy has a small opening giving access to the Potomac.
Finally, the lighthouse itself, which was terrific! Artefacts, photos, maps, and good signage on two levels, and access to the lantern (if you can fit through the hatch!) for a great view! There is a ranger on duty and a small shop. Best yet--there is no extra charge to visit! There are good signs all about outside, as well, including an exhibit on bouys in the large, adjacent sheds that housed coal and bouys (and Coast Guardsmen, for a while, too).
All in all, a nice little park with varied things to do and very nice facilities. We will go back.
