点评:A relatively small gallery but everything inside is of such quality and interest that one can spend quite some time browsing and appreciating the exhibits.
Located a short walk from Canada Place or the main train station and very close to the cathedral, this is a well curated space which gives one a real sense of both traditional and modern indigenous art, which ranges from the expected totem poles but also oars, boats, clothing, jewellery, footwear and homeware.
Do check times and entrance fees before visiting because for a few hours in the afternoon - I want to say between 2:00-4:00pm - entrance is free, although paid tickets are not expensive and so worth it and, of course, one then feels that you are supporting the continuation of Bill Reid's mission to bring northwest indigenous art and crafts to larger audience.
A video presentation on the upper floor details the story behind the raising of the first totem pole in many decades in the 1960's, the creation of which set the skills of Bill Reid upon the map. It is both interesting, informative and very moving.
Staff are softly spoken, very welcoming and helpful. They help to man the small but well stocked shop, where you can find an array of postcards, stationery, books, clothing and gifts, all with an indigenous theme; prices are reasonable and the stock just wonderful.
We enjoyed our visit so much that we took advantage of the fact that we had a few days in Vancouver and went back for another visit - just as good.
Would highly recommend.
